As an athlete playing baseball at New College of Florida, I have always been fascinated by the tension between old-school baseball instinct and modern tracking technology. This project explores whether the rise of tracking metrics has measurably changed outcomes across modern baseball eras.
📊 Data Sources
The data for this project comes from two primary sources:
- Historical Statistics: Player and pitching statistics from the Lahman Baseball Database (accessed via the Lahman R package).
- Modern Tracking Metrics: Batted-ball tracking metrics (such as exit velocity and hard-hit rates) from MLB’s Baseball Savant / Statcast.
Together, these datasets allow us to compare pre-Statcast (2005–2014) and Statcast-era (2015–2025) trends across Major League Baseball.
